Gambling Community Benefit Committee members

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath has appointed the new Gambling Community Benefit Committee for the period 1 June 2018 to 31 May 2023.

The Gambling Community Benefit Committee provides advice on how to distribute Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) grants to community organisations. The independent committee includes representatives with relevant experience, knowledge and skills, and also reflects the diversity of the Queensland community.

Chairperson

Alan Sparks AM, BEM

1 June 2018 to 31 May 2023

Mr Alan Sparks served in the defence force for 27 years before becoming CEO of East Coast Apprenticeships - one of Queensland’s largest group training organisations - for the last 20 years.

Mr Sparks has extensive experience in project management, human resources and training analysis and delivery. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his leadership and contribution to training in defence. As a voluntary member of St John Ambulance, he was awarded the British Empire Medal for gallantry during rescue operations at the Westgate Bridge disaster in Victoria.

As Program Director, Mr Sparks has developed and implemented a range of program initiatives to help the disadvantaged, disabled and distressed. His efforts with the National Apprenticeships Program and the Defence Trade Program involve a unique Advanced Entry Adult Apprenticeship Scheme to upskill Australians and supports the transition of our veterans into a trade career.

In 2016, Mr Sparks became an inaugural member of the Jobs Queensland Board.

Phillip Bell

1 June 2018 to 31 May 2023

Mr Phillip Bell is the CEO of the Ipswich Hospital Foundation. He is also the President of the Ipswich Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Mr Bell has previously held senior and executive leadership roles in various sectors including education (as the Executive Director - Finance and Corporate Services at TAFE Queensland South West), transport (as the Director - Financial Operations and Compliance at TransLink), financial and corporate regulation (senior executive roles with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission and the Australian Taxation Office), and law enforcement (serving with the Queensland Police Service in the Fraud Squad, Drug Squad and Proceeds-of-Crime Task Force).

He is a proud Ipswich local and he and his wife are directors of a family-owned company that has pastoral and agribusiness advisory interests in the Rosewood area. He also has interests in the Harness Racing Industry as an Owner and Trainer and has previously served as Treasurer of the Marburg Pacing Association.

Tony Condon

24 August 2014 to 31 May 2023

Mr Tony Condon is the owner of the Currumbin Creek Tavern. He has worked with many and varied community organisations and has 40 years’ experience in the hotel industry.

Tony is currently a member of the Australian Hotels Association Board and also sits on the Independent Brands Australia national board. He is also Chairman of the Queensland Hotels Association (QHA) Gold Coast Division, Secretary/Treasurer of QHA's Queensland board and is a member of the Australian Liquor Marketers board.

John Corry

1 June 2018 to 31 May 2023

Mr John Corry is General Manager of Charitable Games at Tabcorp. John spent 2 years as COO of Tatts Group Charitable Games and was on the executive team prior to the 2017 merger of Tabcorp Holdings Limited and Tatts Group Limited. Mr Corry’s experience ranges from start-ups to large corporates in sectors that include hospitality, banking, technology, gambling, not-for-profit, sport and social enterprise.

He previously spent over 9 years as a Senior Adviser at Macquarie Bank and was the Chairperson of the Macquarie Group Foundation Advisory Committee in QLD, the philanthropic arm of Macquarie Group. He is the co-founder of the 50-50 Charity Raffle, which partners with organisations to raise funds for not-for-profit organisations, including charities and sporting clubs.

In 2015, Mr Corry was the Brisbane Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the social entrepreneur category.  He has a Bachelor of Business (Banking and Finance), a Bachelor of Marketing and a Masters of Business from Queensland University of Technology. John is a director of Ubet QLD Limited, 50-50 Foundation Limited and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Andrew Costello

24 August 2014 to 31 May 2023

Mr Andrew Costello is the Executive Manager of Human Resources for Casinos Austria International/Accor Asia Pacific. He has 27 years’ experience within the human resources sector, which includes hospitality, retail and not-for-profit organisations. Mr Costello is also an active member of the Reef Hotel Casino's Executive Leadership Team and was a committee member of the Reef Hotel Casino Community Benefit Fund.

Henrietta Marrie AM

1 June 2018 to 31 May 2023

Ms Henrietta Marrie AM is an Elder of the Gimuy alubara Yidinji people, Traditional Owners of the land on which the city of Cairns now stands. Ms Marrie is an Associate Professor at the Office of Indigenous Engagement, Central Queensland University (Cairns Campus) and is Co-Director of Bukal Consultancy Services Pty Ltd.

Returning to Cairns after lecturing at Griffith University in Brisbane, Ms Marrie helped develop the Cairns College of Technical and Further Education’s Aboriginal Ranger training program. In 1994, Ms Marrie became the Cairns Co-ordinator for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Participation, Research and Development Centre at James Cook University and in 1997, was the first Indigenous Australian to gain a professional position within the United Nations.

In January 2018, Ms Marrie was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the community as an advocate for Indigenous cultural heritage and intellectual property rights, and to education. She was also recognised as an Extraordinary Queenslander at The Queensland Greats Awards 2018 for efforts and achievements of extraordinary individuals and institutions making a positive difference in Queensland communities.

Jan Pool

1 June 2018 to 31 May 2023

Mrs Jan Pool is an experienced non-executive director with a strong commitment to corporate governance and financial sustainability of not-for-profit and community-based organisations. As a Business Management Consultant she is committed to the development of self-sufficient and economically sustainable regional and remote indigenous communities by supporting small business and community infrastructure.

Mrs Pool has extensive directorship experience, having served on numerous  boards, board committees and advisory committees. These include public unlisted and ASX listed, not-for-profit and charitable, Queensland Government statutory body and privately owned/managed organisations.

Providing a solid foundation to the role of a director, Mrs Pool has over 30 years’ experience as a senior finance and commercial executive and company secretary across a diverse range of industry sectors, including mining and refining, marine construction and financial, legal and health services.

Sarah Ramsay

1 June 2018 to 31 May 2023

Ms Sarah Ramsay is a Manager in KPMG’s Corporate Affairs Advisory team. She works extensively with public and private sectors to manage reputational risk and build corporate trust through meaningful stakeholder engagement and communications strategies. Ms Ramsay has a wealth of experience in the liquor and gaming sector having worked for state and federal governments and for the peak industry body, Clubs Queensland.

Ms Ramsay has been instrumental in facilitating numerous opportunities and synergies between government and the clubs industry. She is passionate about the role of community clubs and ensuring the ongoing viability and sustainability of the industry.

Michael Sarquis

24 August 2014 to 31 May 2023

Mr Michael Sarquis was appointed Executive Director of the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation in July 2008. Prior to this, Mr Sarquis was the Executive Director of the Queensland Office of Gaming Regulation. His responsibilities include managing the gaming and liquor regulatory licensing and compliance regimes, and implementing the responsible gambling strategy and harm minimisation programs.

Mr Sarquis also has the responsibility of administering the Safe Night Precinct grant fund. He is a member of the Responsible Gambling Advisory Committee and member and former vice president of the International Association of Gaming Regulators.

Alison Smith

1 June 2018 to 31 May 2023

Ms Alison Smith is the General Manager, Corporate Affairs Queensland, Star Group. Her role covers government, industry and media relations for the group’s Treasury Brisbane, The Star Gold Coast and the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane integrated resort development. She is a senior media and corporate relations executive with experience at Rio Tinto’s coal and uranium businesses in Australia, Africa and Canada.

Ms Smith has worked in the public and private sectors, including an international marketing campaign for the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Brisbane in 2014. She has a background in journalism, having worked in newspaper publishing, radio and television, and was a former senior media advisor in the Queensland Government.

Alison is also a director on the Brisbane Festival Board, an executive council member of the Brisbane Development Association, a member of the American Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee and vice president of the Queensland Futures Industry Corporate Affairs Council.

Georgia Soutar

1 June 2018 to 31 May 2023

Ms Georgia Soutar in an Associate Solicitor at MacDonald Law in Toowoomba where she heads up the Succession Law Department. Prior to this, she worked in the legal industry in South East Queensland. Ms Soutar is an active member of the local community and is currently the secretary of diverse organisations such as the Downs & South West Queensland Law Association, South Toowoomba Apex Club, and Toowoomba Community Care Transport. She is also the co-founder of Toowoomba Young Professionals and a foster carer for the RSPCA.

Throughout her studies and career, Ms Soutar has dedicated much of her free time to local volunteer organisations and in 2016 was awarded the Toowoomba Young Citizen of the Year Award.

Julie Strudwick

24 August 2014 to 31 May 2023

Ms Julie Strudwick has been involved in the clubs industry for 25 years and in the hospitality industry for 32 years. She has held many positions during this time, including General Manager of Moreton Bay Boat Club, board member of Clubs Queensland and Sunshine Coast Zone Chair of Clubs Queensland.

Ms Strudwick’s years of involvement with sporting groups, clubs and community groups/charities have been very rewarding and have given her insight into the needs of these organisations. Ms Strudwick is currently the Manager of Keppel Bay Sailing Club and Yeppoon Bowling Club.
